TURLOCK, Calif. (AP) — A California Highway Patrol investigator searching for a freeway shooting suspect was shot Thursday night and a sweeping search was underway for one of two attackers, authorities said.
Ten city blocks in Turlock were cordoned off and officers from various law enforcement agencies from throughout Stanislaus County were searching for the suspect, Turlock police Capt. Steve Williams said at an evening news conference.
Residents were urged to stay indoors, he said.
CHP investigators were looking into a freeway shooting that occurred Wednesday evening and on Thursday found what they believed to be the suspect’s car on a residential block of High Street in Turlock, Williams said.
As they approached, someone began shooting at them, Williams said.
They returned fire and the attacker ran off. Moments later, a second person fired several gunshots, wounding a CHP investigator, Williams said.
Other investigators caught and arrested the first shooter, who wasn’t injured, Williams said.
The officer who had been shot was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
“It is our understanding that the officer is OK,” the county Sheriff’s Department tweeted.
