Many of these undocumented immigrants work in sectors deemed essential — like health care, agriculture, manufacturing, construction and food — meaning they’re helping to keep the country running while social distancing measures are in place. As 10% of the state’s workforce, they also contributed over $2.5 billion in taxes last year despite not being eligible for many of the benefits enjoyed by other Californians.
