British Open 2020 to be canceled due to coronavirus pandemic

British Open 2020 to be canceled due to coronavirus pandemic 1

The coronavirus pandemic has caused the cancellation of another major sporting event

The 2020 Open Championship will be canceled, sources told Golf Digest on Wednesday.

The report said the announcement could come as early as Thursday.

This comes in the wake of the U.S. Open at Winged Foot being pushed back from its June 18-21 dates, according to a recent report by The Post’s Mark Cannizzaro. The plan is for that tournament to remain at Winged Foot, but to be played later in the summer.

The Open, commonly called the British Open, was scheduled for July 16-19 at Royal St. George’s Golf Club, which would have played host to its 15th Open and first since 2011.

The last time the Open wasn’t played was in Royal St. George’s Golf Club 1945 because of World War II, according to Golf Digest.
