Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, which means many public institutions will be closed so families can come together for the festivities.
Most stores in the U.S. are not public, however, meaning they have a choice over whether or not they remain open.
The majority of businesses choose to close on Thanksgiving Day, to allow employees to be with their loved ones, but this is not always the case.

Similarly, many banks are closed on Thanksgiving, as well as federal offices.
