PHOENIX — Five police officers and a woman were injured early Friday after a barricade situation in Phoenix during which a baby was placed outside the home but was not harmed.
The status of the suspected shooter was unclear, but police said on Twitter the barricade situation had been resolved and there was no threat to the public.
The department first tweeted about reports of a shooting at about 3 a.m. local time. The first officer to arrive was shot multiple times, Phoenix police Chief Jeri Williams said at an early morning news conference outside Banner University Medical Center.
At some point, a baby in the home was put into a carrier and placed outside, Williams said, and officers who went to get the baby were shot at. Police returned fire and the suspect then barricaded himself in the home, she said.
The five officers were hospitalized, one with serious injuries, Williams said.
“This is just one more example of the dangers our officers face every day keeping us and our community safe,” Williams said. “If I seem upset I am. This is senseless.”
A woman was also critically injured in the incident, Williams said. It’s unclear how she was related and what led up to the shooting, Phoenix police spokesperson Sgt. Ann Justus told reporters. Justus said the baby was unharmed.
