The officers were shot after they responded to a call at around 10:30 p.m. at the 2400 block of North Market Street, in Wilmington, according to a police statement.

Dozens of their colleagues responded, with the officers transported to a local hospital, where they are in a stable condition, the Wilmington Police Department said.

In an update to its original statement in the early hours of Thursday morning, the department confirmed that a police presence remained at the scene, while the incident is still being treated as an active investigation.

Local newspaper The News Journal reported that officers in tactical gear and carrying long rifles responded to the shooting, alongside members of the state and county police.

Some officers were seen crouched behind vehicles, as the authorities asked local residents to shelter in place and await further instructions from the police.
