Germophobia is a form of anxiety, driven by a desperation to control environments that could potentially make us sick, and navigating this pandemic has sent my anxiety into overdrive. Social distancing is easy when you’re hanging out at home, with your Zoom parties, your FaceTime and your Netflix. While distant friends post pictures of themselves taking the air in bucolic backyards and celebrities serenade us with their rendition of “Imagine” from their 7,000-foot homes, it’s become a Darwinist free-for-all game of sidewalk chicken here in the big city.
