The US now has the third-highest number of coronavirus cases in the world behind China and Italy.

The number of confirmed infections in the country soared Monday morning to more than 35,000, including 471 deaths, according to figures from John Hopkins University.

Former White House Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert warned the latest reports indicate that the US is on track to lead the world in the number of COVID-19 cases by next week.

“Sadly, the numbers now suggest the U.S. is poised to take the lead in #coronavirus cases,” Bossert tweeted. “It’s reasonable to plan for the US to top the list of countries with the most cases in approximately 1 week.”

China has at least 81,000 cases, while Italy has grappled with more than 59,000 infected patients, according to John Hopkins University.

Spain — which has reported more than 33,000 cases — had previously been the third-hardest-hit nation.
