The number of coronavirus patients in US hospitals has dropped below 50,000 — the lowest level in nearly four months, data shows.

There were 48,870 patients being treated for the virus in hospitals Saturday, according to data from the COVID Tracking Project.

“For the first time since Nov 2, the number of people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 is below 50k,” the organization wrote on Twitter.

The number of hospitalizations has been steadily falling since its peak of 132,474 admitted patients on Jan. 6, data shows.

Hospitalizations are a key metric for tracking progress in the pandemic, because unlike case counts, they are not impacted by the number of tests performed.

The US also recorded 70,622 new infections and 1,822 virus-related deaths on Saturday, according to the data.
