UNION CITY — Police said a man is in custody and facing multiple charges after ramming an occupied patrol vehicle shortly before an officer shot at him, authorities said Wednesday.

In a statement, police said officers responded to Extended Stay America Hotel, 31950 Dyer St., at 10:48 a.m. after receiving a report of a woman unable to call 911, being held against her will and afraid of being hurt by a man.

While officers arrived and began planning for a possible hostage situation, other officers learned the woman and man’s name, as well as his criminal history and two active felony arrest warrants. Moments later, officers realized a man fitting his description was in a small compact car parked outside the hotel, and ordered him to stop.

But the man did not comply, police said, and used the car to ram a marked police vehicle. An officer, described only by a police spokesman as a veteran, then fired a single shot at the car, but did not hit the suspect, police said.

Officers then managed to take the man into custody, and found the woman unhurt. Police declined to identify the man, citing an ongoing investigation, but said he was likely to face arrest on suspicion of multiple charges in addition to his arrest warrants.
