U.S. to pay Pfizer $5.3 billion for COVID-19 treatment

The Pfizer deal is the federal government’s second antiviral pill agreement. The feds signed a $2.2 billion deal with Merck earlier this year for that company’s pill, molnupiravir. Per that agreement, Merck will provide enough pills to treat 3.1 million people. The FDA has not approved molnupiravir yet, but is expected to before the end of the year.
