Two police officers and one suspect were shot Friday during a shooting in Maryland, police said.
Two officers responded around 1 p.m. Friday to a report of a “suspicious male” with a gun in Frederick, a city of over 70,000 people about 50 miles west of Baltimore, police Chief Jason Lando said at a news conference. He did not provide information about what led to the shooting.
The two police officers — one man and one woman — were shot. Both the officers and the suspect were flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital.
Lando said police are waitingfor the hospital to provide updates on the conditions of the officers and the suspect. Family members of the two officers had been notified, and police are currently working to identify and notify the suspect’s family, he added.
Lando said police do not know who fired their weapons first.
“We just want to assure the community there is no other threat going on right now,” he said.
Several schools in the area were temporarily on lockout status due to “police activity in the area,” according to a tweet from the Frederick County Public School District.
Less than an hour later, the district tweeted that the lockout status had been lifted.
“All students and staff are safe,” the district said.
