The Texas police officer charged with the murder of Jonathan Price during a disturbance at a convenience store last weekend was reportedly fired on Thursday.
Wolfe City Police Officer Shaun Lucas, on the force for just six months, was canned after allegedly firing four rounds at the black man at a Kwik Chek on Saturday night, authorities told Fox News.
Lucas was “terminated for his egregious violation of the City’s and police department policies,” the city said in a statement to the outlet.
Versions of what exactly led up to the deadly shooting, which was caught on yet-to-be released policy bodycam footage, have differed.
According to a newly released probable court affidavit and Lucas’ lawyer, Price was resisting the cop’s demands and attempted to grab his taser before being shot.
“Mr. Lucas acted within policy and law during this entire incident,” his lawyer, John Snider, told Fox News.
“He attempted to detain Mr. Price and was met with physical resistance. Mr. Lucas only discharged his pistol as a last resort in response to an aggressive assailant who was actively trying to take his taser.”
But Price’s family and their attorney insisted he was not violent toward Lucas and was trying to break up a domestic feud before his death.
“The situation was resolved before law enforcement arrived, according to witnesses,” Price’s family attorney S. Lee Merritt told CNN.
“Why this officer still felt the need to tase and shoot Jonathan is beyond comprehension.”
