Sweden had most coronavirus deaths per capita in Europe last
week 1

Sweden had the highest number of coronavirus deaths per capita in Europe over the last week, new data shows.

The Scandinavian country — which has allowed most schools, restaurants and business to remain open during the global pandemic — saw 6.25 deaths per million inhabitants per day in a rolling seven day average between May 12 and May 19, according to Ourworldinsata.org.

Though deaths in Sweden are on the decline, the per capita figure was the highest in Europe and just above the United Kingdom, which had 5.75 deaths per million.

Sweden has been both criticized and lauded by the World Health Organization for its lax approach to battling coronavirus, including relying on residents to self-regulate.

More than 3,700 people died of COVID-19 in Sweden as of Tuesday, according to the Financial Times.

Neighboring countries Denmark, Norway and Finland, which have implemented stricter measures, have recorded 551, 233 and 300 deaths, respectively.
