If you’re vaccinated and want nothing more than some time out on the water, good news: You can take maskless cruises in Boston Harbor, as long as you’ve had your COVID-19 shots.
The 90-minute “Vaxed and Relaxed” cruises, which began earlier this month, launch from Rowes Wharf twice every Sunday through September. The cruise features entertainment from drag queens and a DJ, along with snacks and a hosted bar. Tickets are $75.
Passengers need to show proof of vaccination and pass temperature checks to board. They don’t have to wear masks, but the fully-vaccinated crew still will. The boat is disinfected between every trip.
The small vessel fits about 12 guests and is operated by Rowes Wharf Water Transport, which (in non-pandemic times) operates water taxis in the harbor.
The cruise is an effort by iVaxed, a Boston-based startup that sells small golden heart-shaped pins — think “I Voted” stickers, but for inoculations. Passengers on the Harbor cruises will get free pins.
“One of our goals with this event is to help reduce social anxieties around the COVID-19 vaccines/pandemic,” iVaxed founder Lou Cueva said in a release. “We couldn’t think of a more unique way to ease into the new normal, while supporting frontline workers, than this premier experience on Boston’s beautiful harbor waters.”
Those who want to purchase a pin online have to upload documents confirming their vaccination. The company says a portion of the proceeds will provide relief to small business owners in the entertainment industry.
The company says it’s also developing “smart pins” with NFC technology that could be used to upload vaccination documents.
