Georgia GOP Sen. David Perdue and his wife will enter quarantine just days before the crucial US Senate runoff elections after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, his campaign announced Thursday.

“This morning, Senator Perdue was notified that he came into close contact with someone on the campaign who tested positive for COVID-19,” a statement from his campaign read.

“Both Senator Perdue and his wife tested negative today, but following his doctor’s recommendations and in accordance with CDC guidelines, they will quarantine.”

It’s unclear how long Perdue will quarantine for, but the development will be a major blow to his re-election bid ahead of a Jan. 5 Senate runoff race.

Republican control of the Senate hangs in the balance with Democrats hopeful they can claw back two seats held by Perdue and fellow Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler.
