San Francisco tops 500 coronavirus cases, reports eighth death 1

San Francisco has now exceeded 500 confirmed coronavirus cases, after public health officials Saturday announced 32 new positive tests for the illness.

The city also said another person has died from COVID-19, bringing the virus’ toll there to eight. The number of people who have tested positive for coronavirus in San Francisco stood as of Saturday morning at 529.

Mayor London Breed and other officials have sounded a cautiously optimistic tone about the still relatively low numbers of deaths and hospitalizations attributed to the virus in San Francisco, while also encouraging residents to keep up the social distancing efforts they say have kept the city from being overwhelmed.

“We have been able to do, I think, a tremendous job in maintaining numbers that people thought would be completely out-of-control at this time,” Breed said Friday.

According to a state dashboard, there are now 75 confirmed COVID-19 patients in San Francisco hospitals, 32 of whom are in intensive care units. Both figures were small increases over the day before.

Nearly 12,500 people have tested positive for coronavirus across California. But with testing for the deadly illness limited, and tens of thousands of test results pending, health officials warn those figures don’t capture the extent of the virus’ spread.
