PINOLE — Police here have released body camera video footage showing a Pinole policeman ducking a shot from a 25-year-old Bay Area man accused of killing his uncle, then firing at him several times, striking and then arresting him during the tense aftermath.
The video shows Pinole police Ofc. Jason Dean shoot 25-year-old Jeramy Dorsey, who was holding a pistol with an extended magazine when he was shot. The video shows Dean taking cover behind an RV after Dorsey fires at the officer, then continuing to chase Dorsey, taking cover behind a black SUV near a dead end and shooting at Dorsey multiple times.
The shooting — in which Dorsey was wounded and Dean was uninjured — came after police were called to the 1100 block of Encina Avenue by Dorsey’s aunt, who reported that Dorsey was outside her home threatening her husband with a firearm. Dorsey allegedly shot and killed his uncle, Surako Follings, then fled down the street and around the corner before police arrived in the area.
Police pursued Dorsey from two sides; according to the video explanation from police, he ran from two officers on nearby Madrone Avenue before encountering Dean, who was coming from the opposite direction. After shooting Dorsey, Dean can be heard telling him to drop his gun. Dorsey leaves the pistol a few feet from him and doesn’t reach for it, while Dean repeatedly yells commands at him and tells him he will approach once backup arrives.
Within five minutes, police handcuff Dorsey and begin searching him, while Dean unloads Dorsey’s pistol and drops it several feet from where Dorsey is lying. The officers lift up Dorsey’s shirt to expose a gunshot wound on his belly.
Dorsey was hospitalized for several weeks after the shooting, but was transferred back to the county jail in late July, according to jail records. He has been charged with murdering Follings, attempting to murder Dean, and assault with a firearm for allegedly pointing a loaded gun at another family member.
Police have not disclosed the suspected motive in Follings’ homicide. During a 9-1-1 dispatch tape also released by police, Follings’ wife can be heard saying her nephew is threatening Follings with the gun. At one point, she exclaims “Oh my god!,” then tells the dispatcher that she is trying to shoot back at Dorsey before saying that Dorsey had shot her husband.
