PINOLE — Multiple law-enforcement agencies will investigate a double shooting that claimed a male victim’s life and injured a possible suspect police claim shot several times at an officer, authorities said Thursday.

According to a police statement, dispatchers learned of a reported disturbance “involving a subject armed with a gun” at a home in the 1100 block of Encina Avenue.

While officers were en route, they learned a person was shot by a suspect who was fleeing the scene. Soon after arriving and setting up a perimeter, an officer was confronted by a gunman who “fired multiple shots.” The officer then “returned fire and struck the suspect,” police said.

After providing medical care, the suspect was taken to a hospital and initially listed in critical but stable condition, a law-enforcement source said. The officer who shot him was unhurt, police said.

Other officers at the scene searched the home and found a male victim with a gunshot wound who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said there were no other outstanding suspects or public-safety threats. Investigators also recovered a handgun at the scene.

Police said the department will join the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office in investigating the incident under a countywide incident protocol.
