Although it probably violates shelter at home orders in some locales, street artists are finding ways to express themselves during the coronavirus pandemic.

They’ve painted images of fictional characters such as Spider-Man or added a smart addition to statues of Rocky, showing how both famous faces can abide by the new norms of wearing a face masks. Meanwhile in Germany, a mural of Gollum from “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy lampooned the fixation on buying toilet paper as the COVID-19 pandemic grew more serious.

In other places, street art pieces reflect a desire for human contact at a time when many are urged to practice social distancing while others send a simple message to stay home to “bend the curve” or wash hands to prevent the spread of the illness. Both recommendations are meant to slow the rate of infection so that hospitals aren’t inundated with COVID-19 patients.

Another theme of the global street art reflects gratitude to front-line medical workers, who put themselves in danger caring for those who are infected with the novel coronavirus. The pieces praise them as heroes.
