An off-duty NYPD officer died in a single-vehicle crash on the Long Island Expressway in Brentwood late Monday night, the NYPD said.
Ryan McKenna, 30, of Hicksville, was driving a 2018 Nissan Frontier eastbound when he hit the median. The pickup truck then overturned in the HOV lane, just west of Exit 53, at about 10:55 p.m., according to the Suffolk police.
McKenna was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead, Suffolk police said.
McKenna was assigned to a public housing project in Queens called Woodside Houses and had been on the force since 2015, the NYPD said.
This is the second time in less than two weeks that an NYPD officer has died on the Long Island Expressway.
Anastasios Tsakos of East Northport, who was posthumously promoted to detective, was directing traffic after a crash on the Long Island Expressway in Queens on April 27 when authorities say he was hit by a Hempstead woman who was driving intoxicated.
The woman, Jessica Beauvais, 32, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and other crimes in a 13-count indictment that was unsealed Monday.
