OAKLAND — An eastbound Caldecott Tunnel bore reopened to traffic after police activity closed it, severely delaying commute traffic Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Shortly before 3:45 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers began diverting eastbound traffic off Highway 24 lanes, a CHP officer said.

A Sig-alert closing the tunnel’s No. 1 bore was issued at 4:18 p.m. with no estimated time of reopening, the officer said. The alert was lifted at 5:46 p.m. Traffic delays on eastbound Highway 24 and northbound Highway 13 lingered.

A CHP spokesman was not immediately able to corroborate at least one report citing an investigation of a non-injury shooting between two vehicles, but later said a spokesman with the department’s Golden Gate Division would issue a statement late Thursday. When contacted, that spokesman said an investigation was in progress, with no preliminary details available to share.
