A member of the Oakland A’s organization has tested positive for the coronavirus, the team announced Sunday morning.
The A’s final game against the Astros in Houston Sunday will be postponed, and the A’s will self-isolate in Houston Sunday night, according to a release from the organization. The A’s are scheduled to play a three-game series in Seattle starting on Tuesday.
Oakland joins the Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets as teams who have seen games postponed for positive tests within their organizations.
The A’s are the first MLB team in either western division to have games postponed due to a positive coronavirus test. But this isn’t the first positive test in the A’s organization. Jesús Luzardo, who was scheduled to start Sunday’s game, tested positive during intake testing in July prior to training camp in Oakland. A’s minor-league coach Webster Garrison tested positive for the coronavirus in March and was hospitalized.
Major League Baseball released the following statement:
“Following a positive test for COVID-19 in the Oakland Athletics’ organization, today’s scheduled game between the A’s and the host Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park has been postponed out of an abundance of caution and to allow for additional testing and contact tracing to be conducted. Major League Baseball will continue to provide updates as necessary.”
The team has not disclosed the identity of the positive test, in accordance with HIPAA.
