NYC launches massive effort to expand capacity to treat coronavirus patients; more than 13,000 hospital beds to be set up starting this month 1

Authorities are setting up about 750 non-ICU beds at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, with an expected opening around the middle of the month. That comes after the Army Corps of Engineers and Federal Emergency Management Agency turned the Javits Center in Manhattan into a makeshift hospital with 1,000 beds available and another 1,500 to come. The Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort, with a capacity of 1,000 beds, arrived in the city on Monday, while sites are also in the works at Central Park, a H + H facility on Roosevelt Island and the Queens stadium where the U.S. Open is held.
