A day after the Oakland A’s announced that one member of their organization had tested positive for COVID-19, reports Monday indicated that all other individuals within the team’s traveling party have tested negative.
All remaining A’s players and staff members tested negative for COVID-19 on Sunday, according to reports from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale and MLB’s Jon Heyman. An A’s spokesperson would not confirm the negative tests, saying Monday that Major League Baseball and the team would continue to provide updates when necessary.
Saturday night after a doubleheader, the A’s informed Major League Baseball of their positive test result, which caused the team to postpone its road game Sunday with the Houston Astros. The positive result came from Friday’s round of testing
The team has not identified which member of the organization tested positive, or said whether the positive test came from a player, a coach or another staff member.
The A’s were slated to self-isolate in Houston through Sunday night, at least, and it is unknown when the series finale with the Astros will be rescheduled.
The A’s are scheduled to play a three-game series in Seattle starting Tuesday, but the status of that series was up in the air pending the new round of tests they took Sunday morning. MLB was to decide whether that series will start Tuesday at T-Mobile Park, the Mariners’ home.
“Anything beyond today, we’re not going to speculate on,” A’s general manager David Forst told reporters Sunday. “Ultimately, we need to see if this is an isolated infection or a larger issue. The only way to do that is to be patient and make sure everybody isolates at the hotel today. We’ll wait until tomorrow to figure out tomorrow.”
The A’s, at 22-12, have the second-best record in the American League and entered Monday with a 2 1/2 game lead over the Astros for first place in the AL West.
