COVID-19 has hit this weekend’s college football slate hard.
The latest casualty is Saturday’s Maryland-Ohio State game, which was cancelled and won’t be made up. Maryand paused all team activities on Wednesday after eight players have tested positive for the virus over the past week.
“There is nothing more important than the health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” Maryland athletic director Damon Evans said in a statement. “We realize that this news is disappointing to all of the Maryland fans out there who were looking forward to the Terps taking on an outstanding Ohio State team, but the responsible thing for us to do is pause football activities, given the number of positive cases currently in our program.”
Already, four SEC games — LSU-Alabama, Georgia-Missouri, Texas A&M-Tennessee and Auburn-Mississippi State — have been postponed because of positive tests. Maryland-Ohio State is the third Big Ten game to get canceled, after Wisconsin was unable to play its last two games, against Nebraska and Purdue, due to rising positive tests.
