A Maryland man was charged with attempted murder after plowing his vehicle into a police station and attacking several police officers.

The incident began on Sunday at approximately 9:34 p.m. when a man called the police station and said he was planning on coming there to “kill a police officer,” according to a Facebook post from the Havre de Grace Police Department.

The man was identified by police as 24-year-old Timothy Joel Jackson Kahl, whose residence is in the 400 block of Village Drive. Police said that based on information they received during the phone call, they believed Kahl was at his home. When officers arrived there, they noticed him “driving erratically.”

“He struck several parked vehicles and tried to run over the officers before fleeing the area,” police said in the Facebook post.

After attempting to strike officers with his vehicle, Kahl drove to the Havre de Grace Police Department, where he struck a parked car. According to police, “Kahl then intentionally drove his vehicle into the front doors of the police station into the lobby.”

In a video posted to Facebook by the department, Kahl’s vehicle can be seen plowing through two sets of glass doors at the police station. He eventually smashed his vehicle into a wall and was unable to continue driving.

Kahl then exited his vehicle and attempted to attack officers, police said. He was then shot with a Taser and arrested. Kahl was taken to the University of Maryland Harford Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries, according to police.

The police department said in the Facebook post that while no officers or staff were injured, “the police department’s building sustained severe damage.”

Police charged Kahl two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault in the first degree, reckless endangerment and three counts of malicious destruction of property with a value greater than $1,000.

Shortly after Kahl was arrested and charged, Havre de Grace Mayor William Martin posted a statement on Facebook that said: “The events that unfolded late last evening are a testament to the true dedication and professionalism of the men and women who make up the Havre de Grace Police Department and shed light on the constant danger and threats they face every day.”

Martin continued, “We are all very grateful that the subject was apprehended professionally and without any injury to our officers or the public. We must always be cognizant that no community, no matter how great, is immune to such random acts of violence.”

Newsweek reached out to the Havre de Grace Police Department for further comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.
