One option for saving the
economy during COVID-19
The following scheme may resurrect broad-based economic activity while continuing to control viral spread.
Two-shift living prescribes two alternating 14-day time periods. One is called light shift and the other dark shift.
During the light shift, all businesses are open as they were before, including schools, restaurants, gyms, sporting venues, etc. People live without restrictions.
Dark shift is a universal quarantine period during which time all retail stores are closed. Essential businesses operate by employing a second set of workers, who supply groceries, meals and medicine. These workers are quarantined during the light shift. The healthy emerge during the light shift. Anyone who contracts the COVID-19 during the light shift, along with all of us, returns to isolation for dark shift.
The predictable and periodic return to social living would ease the difficulty of sheltering in place and give those who cannot work from home the opportunity to be employed.
