Veterans Day will see millions of Americans remember those who are serving or have served in the Armed Forces.
During this time, many public institutions will be closed as people come together to commemorate the federal holiday.
On the stock market, many of the companies which trade there are public companies, but this does not mean the same thing as being a public institution.
While many of these businesses may be closed to give employees the chance to spend time with their families, it may not be the case for the stock market itself.
Is the Stock Market Open on Veterans Day?
The stock market remains open on Veterans Day, but with a difference.
There will be no trading on bond markets on Thursday, but the stock market will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET on this day.
According to MarketWatch, the markets still trading are the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, all running on the hours mentioned.
Private banks can choose to close or remain open on Veterans Day, however the Federal Reserve along with most public banks will close their branches.
Most banks will still be available online and over the phone.
What Is Veterans Day?
Veterans Day is a day to remember and commemorate those who have fought or are fighting as part of the military.
It is celebrated all over the world on November 11, though using names from Armistice Day to Remembrance Day.
In the U.S.A., the day was originally called the Armistice with Germany at the end of the First World War, until some years later it was changed to Veterans Day, to remember all those who have been members of the Armed Forces.
During the 1970s, the day was also moved to the end of October, however this was soon changed to November 11, where the day has remained since 1978.
To commemorate those in the Armed Forces, there are parades, memorial services and other events all over the country.
At Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier had its centennial commemorated, allowing members of the public to lay flowers on the grave. This was the first time members of the public were allowed to approach the grave in 100 years.
Harry Rock Above of the Crow People led a group from his people to lay a special wreath on the grave before giving a speech in a special ceremony.
Historians and others spoke at this service, along with thousands of people laying flowers.
