With unemployment projected to reach more than 30% nationwide, people filing for unemployment — particularly blue-collar workers — are likely to be newly eligible for food benefits, and many community-based organizations stand ready to meet a wave of increased demand for safety net enrollment services. For example, over the course of only two weeks, my organization has already seen a 53% increase in the number of clients connected with our food and nutrition services bundle, which refers people to the appropriate supportive food programs in their community for their needs. In preparation for this increased demand, we also launched a COVID-19 Response Fund to help us expand our enrollment capacity.
