“He wanted to build things, he wanted to become an architect,” sister Connie Markoutsas recalled. “He caddied at the Evanston Golf Club and one day, as he was walking home from there, there was a little bird on the sidewalk. He bent down, picked up the bird and carried it home …. Pete said he wanted to help the bird so badly, and he felt helpless. That’s when he decided he wanted to become a vet.”
