Friday marks the one-year anniversary of state officials announcing the first confirmed COVID-19 case in Colorado.
“During the past year, we have tragically lost nearly 6,000 Coloradans to this deadly virus,” Gov. Jared Polis said in a news release.
Polis invites all Coloradans to participate Friday in a “virtual statewide Evening of Remembrance,” to honor pandemic victims who lost their lives.
Ways for residents, businesses and governments to participate in the statewide event include:
- Turn building lights magenta, if possible, at 6 p.m. Magenta represents universal love, compassion and kindness.
- Police and fire departments are asked to turn their lights on, at 6 p.m. for one minute.
- Attend the virtual remembrance ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in which Polis will address the state on the pandemic. Polis’ presentation will be on television, digital platforms and the governor’s Facebook page.
As part of the day, World War II-era aircraft will fly over the state Capitol at 4:30 p.m., the release said.
Cities, counties, organizations and businesses participating, as of 6 p.m. Thursday, include Ridgeway, Windsor, Golden, Northglenn, Aurora, Bennett, Superior, Pueblo, Centennial, Snowmass Village, Blue River, Fruita, Glenwood Springs, Colorado Springs, Arapahoe County, El Paso County, Denver, Durango, Boulder, Fort Collins, Ophir, Brighton, Commerce City, Arvada, Nederland, Denver Broncos – Empower Field at Mile High, Colorado Rockies – Coors Field, Colorado State Capitol.
The list of participants is expected to grow through the night Thursday into Friday, according to the release.
