More virulent strains of COVID have added urgency to the debate, although much is still unknown about those variants, which originated in New York City, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Brazil. All of those variants have now been identified in the Big Apple, and earlier this month, city officials said variants make up more than half of overall cases in the city.
