Enrollment and attendance have been low this year at schools around the nation, and CPS experienced its largest enrollment drop in more than two decades, from 355,000 to below 341,000. District leaders in the fall said they believe that is driven by fewer new students enrolling, with preschool accounting for 41% of the enrollment loss. As of the 20th day of this school year, 281,225 students were enrolled in district-run schools and 59,433 in charter, alternative and options schools.
