HAYWARD — Seniors and families worried they might go hungry amid the coronavirus pandemic are about to get some relief.
Starting Saturday, a coalition of local organizations will team up with Tacos Uruapan, a business at 29950 Huntwood Ave., to launch the “COVID-19 Emergency Family Meal Program,” which will deliver free meals to 100 households over the next five weeks.
“This partnership is important because we accomplish three important COVID-19 policy goals simultaneously: follow the shelter-in-place order, connect families and seniors to food, and as much as possible keep neighborhood businesses open and jobs secure,” City Councilman Mark Salinas said in a statement.
The effort is being promoted by Hayward Promise Neighborhoods. It was not immediately available how households will be vetted.
Led by California State University East Bay and funded by a $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the Hayward Promise Neighborhood is a partnership of residents, local schools, colleges, government agencies, businesses and nonprofit organizations that aim to ensure the well-being of the community, according to its website.
Salinas works closely with the group.
The meals will be delivered within 39 streets in the Gading and Huntwood neighborhoods.
