California will soon surpass 10,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.
As of Wednesday evening, the state stood at 9,828 total confirmed cases and 211 deaths, according to data compiled by this news organization.
Santa Clara County, the most populous county of the Bay Area, has the state’s second-most cases, with 956 confirmed by the health department. Los Angeles County, which saw a boom Wednesday of more than 1,000 cases, has more than three times as many as any other county.

San Mateo County reported 65 new cases, bringing its total to 453, with 10 total deaths related to the novel coronavirus. – Evan Webeck, 9:39 a.m.

San Jose’s Bloom Energy, a fuel cell producer, is working to fix broken ventilators to help in the coronavirus crisis at Gov. Newsom’s request. So far the company has fixed 500. – Associated Press, 7:27 a.m.
Air travel to and from Silicon Valley is way down in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. Travel in March through TSA checkpoints at San Jose International Airport was down 62.5 percent from March 2019, and March 31 had less than 5 percent of the traffic of that date a year ago. – George Avalos, 6:59 a.m.
Forty-four students from the University of Texas have tested positive after traveling to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for spring break about two weeks ago, against the advice of public health officials. – CNN, 6:48 a.m.
California’s economic slump has deepened significantly in the last week. Nearly 879,000 Californians filed for unemployment last week, nearly five times the 186,000 claims the week before.
