Coronavirus: Intel to donate 1 million masks, pieces of protective gear to health workers 1

Intel has become the latest Bay Area company to make a massive sign of support in the fight against coronavirus, with the semiconductor leader saying it will donate more than 1 million pieces of protective gear to health care workers.

Intel made its donation plans public late Monday. Todd Brady, Intel’s director of global public affairs, said the Santa Clara-based tech giant said it will use its factory stock and emergency supplies to provide the equipment that will include “masks, gloves, face shields, and other gear.”

The donations come on top of a $1 million commitment Intel made to the International Red Cross to help support worldwide coronavirus relief efforts.

Along with Intel, other Bay Area companies have stepped up to provide local and international assistance for healthcare workers in the coronavirus fight.

On Saturday, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook tweeted that his company is donating “millions of masks to health professionals in the US and Europe,” and earlier this month, Cook said Apple’s donations to the coronavirus fight had surpassed $15 million.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Sunday that his company has donated the 720,000 masks it had on reserve in the event of widespread California wildfires to healthcare workers, and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff tweeted that his company delivered 9,000 masks to the University of California at San Francisco, and was working to deliver 5 million more masks and other pieces of protective gear to healthcare workers this week.
