than 100 cases added in San Francisco 1

San Mateo County health officials counted five additional deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic, while more than 100 people were added to the list of confirmed cases in San Francisco in numbers released by health departments early Tuesday.

The latest statistics marked a significant leap from the trends over the past few days in the counties.

The five additional deaths marked the most added in one day to San Mateo County’s fatality list since April 28. The COVID-19 pandemic has killed 56 people in the county, the third-most among the 10 Bay Area counties. Twenty-nine of the victims have been male and 27 female, and 38 have been white.

San Francisco’s 104 new cases marked the biggest leap in one day since the pandemic began in February. The city had not reported more than 85 cases in any single day. The city also saw two more people die, putting its total during the pandemic at 31.

In all, 1,728 people in San Francisco have tested positive for the virus, a number that trails only Santa Clara County (2,244) and Alameda County (1,776) in the Bay Area.

Those two counties and Contra Costa County were expected to update their statistics later Tuesday.

In San Francisco, 17% of the patients have been white, and 14% have been of Asian descent. Nearly half (48%) of the patients have contracted the virus while within the community. The city has not updated its statistics with regard to the number of hospitalizations since Sunday.

San Mateo County has tallied 1,315 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and they added 34 people to that total Tuesday. More women than men (696 to 619) have been diagnosed in the county, and more of coronavirus patients (159) live in the 94015 area code of Daly City than anywhere else in the county.

The county also has not updated it’s hospitalization statistics, but on Sunday, health officials reported that 94% of their beds and 92% of their ventilators were available in case there was a surge in patients.

More than 26,000 people in San Mateo County and 15,000 people in San Francisco have been tested for the virus.
