Coronavirus and Bay Area farmers markets: What’s open this weekend for fresh produce

Coronavirus and Bay Area farmers markets: What’s open this weekend for fresh produce 1

During this coronavirus crisis, farmers markets and agricultural producers are exempted from the “shelter at home” edict because they feed Californians.

“We are happy that farmers markets have been deemed essential services, allowing for
customers to shop for the best local produce available in a safe, stress-free environment,” Gail Hayden, executive director of the California Farmers Market Association, said Friday in a statement. “It’s what our bodies and minds truly need during these trying times.”

In all cases, market organizers say food sampling has been suspended, all vendors will wear protective gloves and disinfectant will be available at the information booths. They are reminding their vendors to maintain social-distancing space and customers to wash all produce and bags after each shopping excursion.

Here’s what will be open this weekend, according to the Urban Village Farmers Market Association, the Pacific Coast Farmers Market Association and the California Farmers Market Association.

NOTE: The weekend markets in Campbell, Concord, Danville, downtown Palo Alto, Pleasanton and San Jose’s Berryessa, Japantown and Santa Teresa neighborhoods are temporarily closed.
