A domestic violence suspect at an Aurora hotel was shot on Monday with a “less-lethal” shotgun and the suspect was taken to a local hospital to be treated.
A round fired from the less-lethal shotgun “penetrated the man’s abdomen,” and he’s “expected to survive his injuries,” police said in a Tuesday news release.
At about 6:05 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a 911 call about a domestic violence incident at the InTown Suites, 14090 E. Evans Ave., police said. Officers found a woman in the lobby with “obvious injuries.”
An attempt was made to contact the suspect, who was uncooperative and armed with a metal object, police said.
“Attempts to de-escalate the situation were not successful and during the arrest, he was shot with a taser, which had no effect on the him, and then two rounds from a less-lethal shotgun, also having little to no effect,” the release said.
Less-lethal shotguns are designed to be loaded with rubber buckshot or beanbag rounds.
Officers grabbed the suspect and pulled him into a hallway, taking him to the ground and handcuffing the man. He was taken to a local hospital. An officer was treated for minor injuries.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team are investigating the incident. Four officers who were at the scene are on administrative leave per department policy.
The suspect remained in a hospital Tuesday night, police said. He’ll be arrested on suspicion of domestic violence when released from medical care.
