Most respiratory droplets, such as those created when a person talks, coughs or sneezes, fall out of the air and land on surfaces within 3 to 6 feet of the person, said Dr. Emily Landon, chief medical epidemiologist at University of Chicago Medicine. Some activities, such as singing or exercising, may make the droplets travel farther, she said.
