ANTIOCH — One person is in police custody and another remains at large after a police pursuit that turned violent when one suspect shot a family dog and broke into an occupied home while attempting to evade arrest, Oakley police said.

Oakley police officers began pursuing a car they believed to be stolen into Antioch at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say the suspects inside the vehicle drove around the local Costco and through downtown. One of the suspects fired at least one round that hit a passing car but didn’t injure anyone.

The driver of the vehicle crashed shortly after and two suspects in the car began to flee on foot.

Officers said they captured the drive without incident with help from a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s helicopter, but the second suspect got a way after fleeing into a residential area on West Third Street.

The second suspect jumped a fence into a backyard and shot a dog that approached him, police said. The dog is being treated for a gunshot wound and is listed in stable condition.

Police said the second suspect attempted to enter the house and eventually shot out the rear sliding glass door while the homeowner and his 14-year-old son were in the living room.

The two fled out the front window of the house and escaped unharmed while the suspect then ran upstairs and took car keys and a green mechanic’s jump suit before jumping yard-to-yard toward K Street.

A Concord police dog tried to find the second suspect but was unsuccessful. The suspect was last seen in the area of West Third and K streets.
