In the United States, the Grand Princess saw what was at the time assumed to be the first COVID death in California. By late March 2020, a month after the ship first docked in San Francisco, more than 100 passengers tested positive out of about 1,000 who elected to do so. At least seven people died: six passengers and one crew member.
