Three people were injured, one of them seriously, when a deer rammed into a Black Lives Matter march in New Jersey, according to police.

The harrowing incident happened in New Brunswick around 5 p.m. Friday, when hundreds of protesters marched along County Route 533 as part of the town’s “March for Justice” in the wake of George Floyd’s police custody death, with a police escort leading the demonstrators, police said on Twitter.

That’s when the deer bolted out of woods on the South Brunswick High School grounds and slammed into the marchers, police said.

“A 69 year old woman received serious head injury and was take (sic) to an area hospital,” South Brunswick police said on Twitter. “She was in intensive care late Friday night. Two others were treated on scene.”

Police did not identify the injured marchers but said in an update on Twitter Saturday that the elderly woman’s condition was upgraded.

“The condition of the woman injured in yesterday’s march has improved,” the tweet said. “We continue to pray for her complete recovery.”
