It was the Jets’ worst fears realized, Zach Wilson on the ground in agonizing pain.
The rookie quarterback took two big hits in the span of three plays in the second quarter of the Jets’ game against the Patriots and would eventually make his way to the sideline. He went into the medical tent and later the locker room. After initially being ruled questionable to return, he was ruled out for the game at the start of the second half.
Mike White, with no prior experience, replaced Wilson and actually threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Corey Davis.
The hit that knocked Wilson out came from Matthew Judon. But a few players earlier may have done damage, too. Scrambling to his right, Wilson was hit low after throwing the ball out of bounds by Lawrence Guy. No penalty was called and coach Robert Saleh was animated on the sideline, upset at the lack of a flag.
