NorthShore University HealthSystem, for example, views the idea of sending home certain types of COVID-19 patients — such as those who need supplemental oxygen — as a last resort. If the health system, which has five hospitals in Chicago and the north suburbs, ran out of beds, it would prefer to first transfer patients to other hospitals or skilled nursing facilities, said Dr. Neil Freedman, division head of pulmonary and critical care at NorthShore.
