COVID-19 outbreak 1

The University of Wisconsin’s football team will not suit up for a second consecutive week due to an ongoing coronavirus outbreak within the program, school officials announced Tuesday.

The team’s scheduled Saturday home game against Purdue was cancelled after three more players and two staff members tested positive since Saturday, according to the university’s athletic director, Barry Alvarez.

“I share in the disappointment of our student-athletes and staff,” Alvarez said in a statement.

“We have seen a level of improvement in our testing numbers, but not enough to give us confidence to resume normal activities and play our game on Saturday,” he said.

The team’s outbreak was first detected on Oct. 24. Since then, 15 players and 12 staffers have tested positive, the school said.

Wisconsin’s game last Saturday versus Nebraska was also cancelled.
