The head of the World Health Organization has warned against nations rushing to ease coronavirus lockdown measures — insisting that “the worst is yet ahead of us” with the global pandemic.

“We have been warning from day one: This is a devil that everybody should fight,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Monday from the group’s headquarters in Geneva.

“Trust us. The worst is yet ahead of us,” Tedros insisted of the pandemic that as of Tuesday morning had resulted in almost 2.5 million confirmed infections and 171,652 deaths worldwide.

Calling the illness “Public Enemy No. 1,” he called for “global solidarity” in the fight against the “common enemy to humanity.”

Instead, he said, too many countries had “got into trouble” by ignoring scientific research and reaching “the wrong conclusions” in dealing with the crisis.

“Let’s stop additional surprises. Let’s stop tragedy,” he said of the need for a united fight.
