The head of the World Health Organization said the world must be better prepared for the next pandemic — warning the outbreak this year “will not be the last.”

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called on countries to better fund their public health systems, saying too many neglected them in recent years and more was needed for a “healthier and safer future.”

“This will not be the last pandemic,” Tedros said at a press conference Monday in Geneva.

“History teaches us that outbreaks and pandemics are a fact of life. But when the next pandemic comes, the world must be ready — more ready than it was this time.”

Since coronavirus emerged in Wuhan, China, there have been more than 27 million cases across the globe, including at least 893,000 deaths, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.
