President Trump on Sunday is expected to announce the emergency authorization of convalescent plasma as a treatment for coronavirus patients.
The president is set to issue an emergency order which would make it easier for some patients to obtain the treatment, White House officials told the Associated Press.
This comes after the Food and Drug Administration last week halted an emergency approval for the approach to allow for more data to be reviewed.
Blood plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19 is rich in antibodies and may help those battling the disease.
But the evidence of whether it works, when to administer it and what dose to use has been inconclusive so far.
Trump on Saturday accused the FDA of deliberately slow-walking coronavirus treatments and therapeutics to hurt his 2020 reelection chances.
The president is set to make the announcement at 5:30 p.m. with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and the director of the Food and Drug Administration Stephen Hahn.
